The Cave Explorer

Our journey starts at 8:00 a.m. with a scenic drive to Kibuyuni in Shimoni, about an hour from Diani Beach. We'll make a brief stop at Shimoni Reef for a bathroom break, then begin with our first cave – the Shimoni Slave Caves – before continuing on to Kibuyuni, where you'll be welcomed by a local community of over 300 small-scale seaweed farmers, 65% of them women. After a brief introduction, you'll tour the seaweed beds and processing plant, with the option to purchase merchandise in support of the community.

Tswaka Caves

At 10:00 a.m. we set off for the Tswaka Caves, where you'll experience:

• A program run by 210 members of a local CBO, which has planted 800 different indigenous trees to date and maintains its own seedling nursery.
• Thirteen species of bats that live in and nest in the caves.
• A virgin forest walk, learning about various species of indigenous trees along the way.
• A community that earns income through the sale of seedlings and cave entry tickets.
• More visits mean more trees planted – and a greener environment for everyone.

We expect to conclude the walk at 12:40 p.m. and head to our restaurant at Mwazaro for a sumptuous lunch, with time to enjoy the pool, the ocean, or a cup of coffee. The day wraps up at 3:30 p.m. as we head back to Diani, full of stories to share with friends and family.
