Tour Overview

Start the day with hotel pickup and a scenic 30-minute drive to Gazi, a coastal community recognised for its mangrove conservation work. On arrival, members of the Gazi Women Boardwalk initiative will welcome you and introduce the community-led efforts protecting this important coastal ecosystem.

Community Impact

The Gazi Women Boardwalk is a community initiative run by 29 local women who came together to support mangrove conservation while creating a sustainable source of income for their families. Through guiding, hosting visitors, cultural activities, refreshments, and add-on experiences such as cooking classes, the women earn directly from tourism linked to the conservation of their local environment.

The initiative also strengthens community ownership of the mangrove forest. By sharing their knowledge with visitors, the women help raise awareness about the ecological value of mangroves, encourage responsible tourism, and show how conservation can provide practical benefits for local people. Each visit therefore contributes not only to environmental protection, but also to women's empowerment, skills development, and community-based livelihoods in Gazi.

Mangrove Boardwalk Experience

A trained woman guide from the boardwalk initiative will lead you along the mangrove trail. During the walk, she'll explain the different mangrove species found in Gazi, their local and commercial uses, and their vital role in supporting the wider ecosystem.

Gazi is home to six of Kenya's eight mangrove species. The forest also provides habitat for resident birds, crabs, and a variety of land and marine life.

Boat Ride and Cultural Welcome

After the boardwalk, return to the shelter for a short water break before boarding a boat for a guided ride through the mangroves. The boat trip offers another perspective on the area's flora, fauna, and ongoing conservation efforts.

When you return, the group will be welcomed with a traditional dance, followed by Swahili snacks and refreshments.
